The valley
A valley that has been watched for ten thousand years
Staghorn Estate lies in the Embūte valley, in the far west of Latvia. The ice left it about ten thousand years ago and people arrived not long after. The Curonians held the hill at its centre; the Livonian Order took it in 1244 and the Bishop of Courland left his name on what came after.
The stone is still there, a low broken wall on a wooded rise. So, in September, are the stags.
The hunt
Three ways to hunt the red deer
One quarry, taken honestly. There is no other species marketed here — no boar, no roe. Only the red deer, on ground it has never left.
The rut
Mid-September, roughly ten days. Stalking to a roaring stag, or the high seat at dawn. This is the trip most guests come for.
The high seat
Dawn and dusk over the feeding edges. The quiet route to a mature stag, and the gentler trip to bring a companion on.
Driven & management
October to February. Hinds and calves, selective culls, and driven days for a party of eight to sixteen guns. Or take the estate entire.

The manor
Dinner is at eight, and it is worth coming back for
A private house at the centre of the estate: rooms for nine, a long table, a proper sauna, a fire that is lit every evening of the season. The stag is laid on spruce, the horn is sounded, and nobody says very much.
